Yesterday, at Galleria Cinemas’ JFK location, the Bahamas International Film Festival, in continuation of its Summer Film Series, hosted a viewing of the movie “Rain”. The movie has been gathering much popularity both locally and globally. Directed by Maria Govan, “Rain” stars young Bahamian actress Renell Brown and features a cast of talented local and foreign actors.

I must commend Govan’s creativity and direction in the making of “Rain”. The film, set in the Bahamas, is still able to appeal to a regional and global audience. She is able to be humorous while still managing to raise many pertinent issues facing our country, such as: poverty; drug abuse and rape.

Rain, a young girl raised on Ragged Island, a sparcely populated island of the Bahamas, is forced to the city life after her grandmother dies. She must leave Ragged Island and travel to New Providence (Nassau) to live with her astranged drug-addicted mother. She is faced with ridicule from her peers, and blatant negative influences; with the help of a Physical Education teacher and an unexpected, smoking school-mate Rain overcomes.

As an 'extra' in this truly magical film (although my scene was omitted), I give it five well deserved stars.
