It has been said that there are no poisonous snakes in the Bahamas. I've heard this many times, but I'm not certain it's true.

However, since this blog is designed specifically to provide you with information about the Bahamas--whether it's true or not--we'll just assume there are no poisonous snakes here.

I'm reasonably sure that some historical figure like St. Patrick didn't drive all the snakes from these islands (if you don't get that reference, you need to brush up on Irish history).

In fact, from what I can see, there are still plenty around here. Some are even of the reptilian persuasion.

You don't see these reptiles too often here in Nassau, but we managed to catch a glimpse the other night of a rather large fellow resting on the top of a fence behind our house. His head was not arrow-shaped--usually a sign of a poisonous type of snake--and he just sat there for a long time without moving a muscle.

We figure that he was probably a constrictor or some sort, waiting for a tasty mouse (or better yet, a rat) to trot his way along the fence. If he rids the surrounding area of vermin, he's a welcome addition to our yard.

Besides, I think Nobu can take him, if need be!
