I recently noticed a new addition to the vacant lot area across the street from our subdivision, one that comes complete with a white tent, a van, and a colourful billboard.

For those of you who have never ventured further than the vendor stalls on Potter's Cay, or even past the restaurants of Marina Village, Nassau has quite a thriving Revival business going on.

Sometimes I'm tempted to attend one of these services to see what it's all about. But the fact that so many "blessed" and "annointed" people would also be in attendance always scares me away.

Travel deep into the heart of Nassau, and you will discover a world of self-appointed bishops, deacons, prophetesses, preachers, healers, reverends, brothers, and priestesses each with their own tent, their own operations, and--in some cases--their own private jet!

In fact, there are three different churches--two in tents and one in a structure with a tin roof--within 500 yards from each other along Prince Charles Drive.

The operations of these spiritual guardians dot the landscape in such numbers and variety that you can hardly drive four blocks without encountering one. You might think that simple competition within the industry, on an island that is a mere 21 miles long by 7 miles wide, might force some to simply take down their tents, get back into their Mercedes Benz, and drive away.

Yet the very reverend reverends continue to thrive and muliply.

And once again I'm reminded of the lyrics of an old song by Loggins & Messina called Same Old Wine:

They preach this thing, religion
But we show no faith at all

Follow suit on Sunday
But on Monday forget it all

If the times should find us needing him
Then my friend, Lord have mercy on our soul.

Well someday the truth will catch us

I just hope it don't catch us all by surprise
